Safety FAQs
Do GLOCK pistols have a safety?
GLOCK pistols have three safeties. The SAFE ACTION® System is safety system consisting of three passive, independently operating, mechanical safeties. All three safeties disengage sequentially as the trigger is pulled and automatically re-engage when the trigger is released. The three safeties are the Trigger Safety, the Firing Pin Safety, and the Drop Safety.
What is the trigger safety on a GLOCK pistol?
The trigger safety is a lever built into the center of the trigger. When the trigger safety is in the forward position, it blocks the trigger from moving rearward. The trigger safety and the trigger must be drawn back at the same time to be able to fire the pistol. If the trigger safety is not depressed, the trigger cannot be moved and so a round cannot be fired. This trigger safety was developed to prevent unintended discharges of a round if the pistol is dropped or lateral forces are applied to the trigger.
What is the firing pin safety on a GLOCK pistol?
The firing pin safety mechanically blocks forward motion of the firing pin. As the trigger is pulled, the trigger bar pushes the firing pin safety up and frees the firing pin channel. If the shooter decides not to fire and releases the trigger, the firing pin safety automatically reengages.
What is the drop safety on a GLOCK?
The trigger bar rides in a safety ramp within the trigger mechanism housing. The trigger bar engages the rear portion of the firing pin and prevents the firing pin from moving forward. As the trigger is pulled, the bar rides down the safety ramp and allows the release of the firing pin. After firing, the trigger bar moves upward and reengages the firing pin.
What are rules of firearm safety?
The four rules of firearm safety are:
1. TREAT EVERY FIREARM AS IF IT IS LOADED.
2. ALWAYS KEEP THE FIREARM POINTED IN A SAFE DIRECTION.
A safe direction is one in which no one can be injured in the event the gun fires. Never point the gun (whether loaded or unloaded) at yourself or anyone else. In selecting a safe direction, you must consider that a bullet can ricochet or glance off any object it strikes (including even the surface of water), that it can penetrate walls, ceilings, floors and windows, and that even handgun bullets can travel over one mile, while some rifle bullets can travel several miles.
3. KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER AND OUTSIDE THE GUN'S TRIGGER GUARD UNTIL THE GUN IS POINTED AT THE TARGET AND YOU HAVE DECIDED TO FIRE.
4. ALWAYS BE SURE THAT YOUR TARGET AND WHAT'S AROUND AND BEYOND IT ARE SAFE BEFORE FIRING.

What are my options for safe storage of my firearm?

Pistol Use and Maintenance
How do I properly maintain my GLOCK pistol?
Proper cleaning and lubrication prevent corrosion and removes accumulated dirt and debris that can affect your pistol’s operation. Reference the OWNER'S MANUAL on routine maintenance for your model.
Can I dry fire my GLOCK pistol?
It’s ok to dry fire your GLOCK pistol, but we recommend using a snap cap or dummy round if you will be dry firing for a long period of time.
What kind of ammunition should I use in my GLOCK pistol? Can I use +P and +P+ ammunition?
We recommend using ammunition that is manufactured and meets SAAMI or other industry standards, and while some +P ammunition meets these guidelines, +P+ usually does not. This ammunition may generate a higher pressure than standard ammunition, which could shorten the life of the parts of your firearm.
Can I use lead bullets?
No, we recommend the use of jacketed ammunition only.
Can I convert my .40 Cal. pistol to .357 Sig or .357 Sig to .40 Cal.?
Yes, in most cases you can convert your GLOCK pistol to another caliber by changing the barrel. However, early GLOCK models may not be able to be converted. If you aren’t sure if your pistol can be converted, contact Technical Services at Technical.Service@glock.us.
When I disassemble my pistol, I notice that the recoil spring is no longer seated on the assembly notch of the barrel. Is this normal?
Yes, the assembly notch is for assembly only. The recoil spring assembly drops down into the frame recess and stays there until it is disassembled, when the slide and barrel come forward, picking it up out of the lower position.
